Customers Need Water Shut-off ValvesCity of Atlanta As the City's Automated Meter Reading (AMR) Program continues to equip water meters with AMR technology that will allow meters to be read electronically, installers are locking customer's water meter boxes to prevent anyone from tampering with the AMR components. Some customers have expressed concern that locked water meter boxes don't allow them access to the water shut-off valves. Section 606.2 of the Georgia State Plumbing Code requires homeowners to have a secondary water shut-off in their property; the water meter box is located in the right-of-way and is the property of the City of Atlanta. Often secondary water shut-off valves are located in basements or crawl-spaces near a point at which water lines enters the dwelling. DWM encourgage customers to determine if they have a seondary water shut-off valve and to ensure that it is in working order. If there is no secondary water shut-off valve, the customer shoujld hire a plumber to install one on the customer's property.
